The avett Brothers.
"Please Pardon YOurself".

Picture
The Avetts do a nearly impossible thing.  They manage to write earnest and honest songs without coming across as cheesy.  That's not easy and not something you can underestimate.  A mustachioed gentleman I know once said, "The Avett Brothers write great songs about being a young man."  Couldn't have put it better myself.

This one's from their Mignonette record and young men should listen up and listen good.

devendra banhart.  "goin' back".

Picture

Happy Thanksgiving all.  Here's a tune for those of you traveling back to where you once belonged...

Devendra Banhart's a weird guy.  But he's slowly coming back to the middle.  This one's from his latest album,  and...wait...oh shit...is that Marshall Tucker Band?  Nope, it's your friendly neighborhood freak-folker.

I was on the fence until I saw Devendra's cover of Townes Van Zandt's
"Colorado Girl" awhile back on the great documentary "Be Here to Love Me" (more on that later).

We're taking a break for the rest of the week.  Tune in Sunday for the latest post-holiday edition of SMS.

deerhunter.  "desire Lines".

Had LC gotten off of its dead ass and put together a 'best of' list for 2010, Deerhunter's Halcyon Digest would have probably come in at #1.  Not exactly the most original choice for a rock & roll blog (this record was a music geek fave), but it really doesn't matter.  That's not Deerhunter's fault.  Really a great and fantastically confusing album.

This lyric's off of "Desire Lines" and the song sounds like the feeling of plowing down the freeway at 100 mph.  In the opposite direction of all of your problems, that is.

Have a listen below.  Cheers to Brooklyn Vegan for the excellent shot of Bradford Cox in action (top left).

It's important to remember where we've come from.  A homebase from which to move forward.  Creedence put the ROCK in country-rock, and their massive influence seems to be mostly underestimated.  With a few notable exceptions.  This one's obviously from Green River and it's a subtle reminder that CCR doesn't judge.  Just come on home and we'll take care of ya.

Scorses’s documentary “Living in the Material World” on George Harrison has me feeling wistful about the quiet Beatle.  This one’s from George’s best solo album and sums up the meditative bent Harrison was on for most of the latter part of his life.  Always one of my favorite tunes of his and Jim James did it justice with his slow-burning cover on his Harrison tribute EP.  Both below.

Also, don't forget to tune in for the return of Sunday Morning Sessions after you've plowed through your weekend.

Sometimes a lyric gets in your head and won't leave.  The honesty just smacks you in the goddamn chin.  This one's from the Dead Weather - one of the most primitive sounding bands that’s been heard in awhile.  When Jack White and Alison Mosshart wail the blues about guilt and infidelity...you believe them.

Have a listen.

Sometimes a lyric pops in your head and won't leave.  We can't explain why.  It's pointless to try.  Occasionally, one will get posted up.

This one's from Wilco, but from a time when they were in more of a cold, shiftless haze than the sunny optimistic crew that's before you today.  As this experiment continues, I'll try not to pimp Wilco too hard (they're a band that doesn't get nearly enough respect).  But I will say that if I were a pimp, Jeff Tweedy would probably be one of my most profitable hookers.
